The Approach

Step One: Leave the divisive rhetoric behind.

This means having an honest dialogue, using honest numbers with every stakeholder. Rhode Island is facing a math problem that can be solved by working together. This is not the time to place blame or point fingers, nor is it a time to underestimate the magnitude of the problem.

Step Two: Quantify the problem.

The pension math problem cannot be solved until the size of the problem is identified. This challenge is like a Rubik’s cube that must be examined from every angle. Eventually, through truth in numbers and clear communication, the state can align the interests of all pension system stakeholders.

Step Three: Take action.

With the problem defined, the state must take action to find workable solutions. This action will take many forms in the coming months.
